The Grand Budapest Hotel is a film that narrates the story of M. Gustave (played by Ralph Fiennes), an outstanding concierge, and Zero Moustafa, his great friend. The movie’s plot revolves around the missing Renaissance painting – how it was stolen and found. It is also about a conflict of a family that owns a massive fortune. The movie is the perfect mix of comedy and action, directed and written by the legendary Wes Anderson.
One of the reflections that can be drawn from this film is the scene where Madame D was peacefully laid to rest with a light illuminating her face. It depicts the culture of making sure that the dead are best dressed for the afterlife. The decorations that adorned her coffin were indications of her wealth, social status, and prestige. In that scene, it could be remembered that Gustave’s face was radiated by a dim light that signifies the sullen mourning felt when someone dies.
It is true that death is one of the most painful things in life, and when people die, they leave an everlasting mark on the people they have met and known. No matter how grand a funeral may be, what’s more important is how a person has changed or affected another person’s life. All people will die, but not everyone will be remembered.
In another scene, Gustave was drinking a glass of water, and Zero was enjoying a glass of milk. It portrayed an age difference between the two – Gustave drank water due to this older age and his need to stay hydrated with the appropriate drink. On the other hand, Zero had milk to strengthen his body and sharpen his mind.
One of the common misconceptions in life is that age can divide people due to their differences in opinions, experiences, and insight. What must be remembered is that age can be a great learning experience for both young and old generations. The old can advise the young to guide them for their future endeavors while the young can inform the old about modern times.
The next scenario is when Mr. Kovac read the will. It can be recalled that Gustave and Zero left the room through a green-colored door. The door may be interpreted as greed and hunger for power and wealth. The scene depicts how Madame D’s relatives yearned for the fortune that she left behind.
Indeed, nothing good can come out of greed. If money is left in the wrong hands, it can cause a great deal of damage to others. Greed can breed corruption, and such an attitude can even lead to the loss of fortune. Regardless of the amount of money, one should remain grounded in humility and modesty.
There was also an immaculate painting of a board in the same scene, and it likewise signifies the people’s greed in the room. The people were prepared to prey on the inheritance to be divided among them. It also involved an altercation between Dimitri and Gustave, which exhibits the violent behavior...
