A Paper on Museum Critique and Personal Analysis on Museum Arts
The Museum Critique is a 4-5 page paper that will utilize skills of visual analysis, interpretation, and the terminology of formal elements and principles of design. For this assignment, you must visit a museum or gallery (see D2L for a comprehensive list of museums, galleries, studios, and exhibitions in the surrounding area). At your chosen museum or gallery, you must select 2-3 works of art that you will analyze, interpret, and describe. As you select your works, think about how you want to structure your paper and how you want to compare and/or contrast your chosen works of art with one another.
Your paper must follow standard formatting (size 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, 1” margins, double-spaced, page numbers and last name in upper right corner starting on the second page) and does not require outside research. The purpose of the paper is for you to be comfortable using the skills, terminology, and concepts we have discussed and actively applying them to your chosen works of art. You should have an introductory paragraph in which you list the works you plan on discussing (artist, title, date, medium, location), as well as the aspects you'll be focusing on (color, composition, subject matter, historical context, etc.) in particular. Regardless which aspects you focus on, the subsequent paragraphs should include an in-depth description of each work of art, followed by considerable time analyzing and interpreting the works.
Your paper should at some point compare and/or contrast the works of art with each other and describe what elements they share and where they diverge from one another. Be sure to take into account aspects such as the medium, scale, and historical/cultural context in which they were created. You should end your paper with a concluding paragraph that reflects on the similarities and differences you encountered, as well as synthesizes some of the larger themes we have discussed (what is art capable of doing? Did it instruct you in some way? Teach you about history, religion, society, or literature? Did it give insight into the artist's personal emotions and motivation?, etc.)
The goal of this assignment is for you to become more comfortable applying the concepts and skills we have discussed for yourself when viewing art and attempting to look at a work of art critically and from several different points of view, taking into account both the formal qualities and the larger context.

Introduction
Hundreds of Art Museums have been built all over America and around the globe. More and more people are becoming engaged in the beauty and majesty of paintings, sculptures, canvasses, and are continually exploring the value and authenticity of these works. Art museums represent the culture, history and memories of life events, societies and communities. It shows the intellectual minds and the love of people for abstract thinking, the aesthetics and even the art of science and literature. Museums are the proof and evidence of historical improvements since time immemorial up to the present. Through the analysis, assessment and study of arts and works in museums, students of Visual and Performing Arts are able to develop and acquire that unique capability to develop a talent and skill in critical analysis in deciphering exhibits, artistic layouts and evaluate the quality of an artistic creation. In this paper, the skills for visual analysis, interpretation and even knowledge of the various terminologies of formal elements and principles of design have been applied. The museum that the author visited is the Crocker Art Museum which was known to be the very first public art museum established in the Western United States. This was built in the year 1885 and is now one of the highly rated museums in California which is a venue for the regional source of study and appreciation of works of art. It offers rare, original and amazing collections of Californian art, such as the works on paper, European art, international ceramics, photography, Asian art, and African and Oceanic art. The Alliance of Museums has given Crocker the AAM accreditation that certifies the standards of operation of a museum in serving the public. Three works of art have caught the researcher’s attention and have been the subjects for visual interpretation, analyses and description. The three art works are the Nydia: The Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii, The Morning Greeting, and the Allegory of Life, which were all seen at the Crocker Art Museum and created by the most brilliant artists and sculptors of all time.
