Inspiration in the reading
My inspiration in the reading is on the explanation about performing arts. Even though, the author does not give an explanation he goes on to differentiate performing arts with related arts like visual arts, comedy and poetry. At the heart of Peña’s idea is that performing arts in not dependent on the stage but rather the body. The preoccupation of people on what constitutes performing arts is then answered through highlighting on the importance of the body in the art. Thus, the body takes precedence as performing arts becoming an inspiration for artists in this genre where creation of art emanates. Performing artists may focus on objects or ideas but ultimately the body takes precedence to illustrate changing identities and art.
New concept
My presumption is that performance arts focuses more on identity and this was one of the main themes of the arts. Nonetheless, Peña states that identity is not central to performance artists as aversion to authority perpetuates the notion that identity is a critical natter. Peña goes on to point out that performance art is appealing to the minority because they can bend their identities and critic the dominant mainstream culture. In essence, identity is something that is used to advance their aides and work where taking one identity over another is merely a survival tactic. However, performance artists understand the boundaries of identity and would not assume an identify that would compromise their identity in a foreign land. This is surprising given that these artists seem to project a larger than life persona where they are not afraid of ridicule.
Confusion
One of the most confusing concepts in performance arts is the rejection of moral truths. Most performance artists view the art as a matter of life and death. Even though, few would endanger their lives simply to make a point their actions are nonetheless extreme. Peña points out that artist an important aspect for the artists where they can go to great lengths simply to perform. However, the idea is mixed up as Peña does not differentiate between provocateurs and those who genuinely draw attention to unjust authority. Although the author acknowledges that at times the actions of performance artists do hurt loved ones, there is no sense of remorse. Thus, rejecting to conform to the society may simply be a utopian idea to act outrageously and escape from their inadequacies.
Disagreement with Peña
Peña states that it is not the job of performance artists to look for answers. However, this statement is dispelled by the observation that the artists seek to bring the radical ideas to the mainstream. Thus, the artists seek to raise issues and then seek to advance their ideas in the hope that they will be accepted. In essence, the artists push the audience to the margins and make them seem a minority and this is to change the way of thinking in a society. Through focusing on the peripheral the artists simply want to dismantle society’s structures.
Summary and additional research
Peña’s article articulates his views on performance by taking the reader through various elements of the art, but it is up to the reader to make their own conclusion. Even though, performance art does not appeal to the mainstream its importance cannot be ignored. As a performance artist Peña represents the growing trend towards embracing multiculturalism. Nonetheless, multiculturalism is now m...
