Essay Assignment: Formal Analysis

Essay Instructions:

For this assignment, you will write a 700-750-word (in the body of the text—no more or less) formal analysis. Keep in mind, a formal analysis only addresses the Elements of Art and Principles of Design…it does not address subject matter, meaning, or context. To do a formal analysis, you only need your eyes and a list (and understanding) of the elements and principles, which are the subject of Part 2 of your text and the Unit 2 video lectures

Essay Assignment Formal Analysis
Michelangelo’s Pietà is a marble sculpture focused on the Virgin Mary and Christ’s dead body on her lap. The three-dimensional sculpture integrates different elements and principles of art and design. The first principle in the sculpture is scale (proportion) which is reflected by the line, space, and texture elements. The second principle is unity (harmony) and variety, where Michelangelo uses the elements of color, space, and form. The third principle is a balance where the elements of shape, form, and space.
The scale or proportion reflects the relative size of an element or form compared to other forms, and scalar relationships help provide depth to the artwork. The lines are the first element in scale in the sculpture, and they are mostly in one direction to another and diagonal, and the lines give the figures lifelike features. There are repetitive lines reflecting Mary’s clothing. The lines further highlight Christ’s ribcage to focus on his lifeless body. Mary’s figure is bigger than Christ’s and reflects the difference in proportion to draw attention to the two figures. To achieve different proportions within space, the artists placed the figures in different sizes to emphasize the importance of Mary in the sculpture. The integration of size, space, and placement of Mary and Christ highlights a sense of depth for these figures, which helps contrast the scale and proportion. The texture is mostly smooth as the sculpture is made of marble, but there is varied texture reflected in Mary's clothing where there are folds, and Christ has wavy hair. Using varied textures on the bodies and clothing makes the sculpture appear to have different scales, but the background has repeated patterns that make the artwork proportional in the principle of scale (proportional); the line, space, and texture elements are used to achieve this.
