Comparison and Contrast of Leif Ove Andsnes' Music
For the current generation, Beethoven Choral Fantasy is a unique crossbreed between choral, concertante, and orchestral genres. This hybrid presents a challenge when programming it in a regular show. Surprisingly, its 19th-century audience did not have such doubts concerning its organization as they expressed pleasure when listening to the composition as they celebrated its beauty. After it was premiered in 1808 in Vienna, pianist Leif Ove Andsnes included it in his “Beethoven Journey,” a piano concerto with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. With the same spirit, Leif Ove Andsnes has gathered immense fame for his intensely emotive and disciplined shows of Rachmaninov. This supreme composer-pianist has gained this fame due to his focus on attributes such as discipline. This is why the 2-CD Rachmaninov set was an award-winning performance in 2004. Unlike concerto no.1, Andsnes gives concerto no. 2 a thrilling and rousing cadence, thus notably overshadowing the former. His manner of balancing the orchestra and the piano in concerto no. 2, both in sound and performance, is so inspiring that it makes the entire production a thrill. Andnes’ performance of Rachmaninov’s Concerto No.2 creates a sense that that the orchestra has its shining moments amid the piano stealing all the attention and starring the show. For instance, in some passages, as witnessed in the first two minutes into the start of the Concerto No. 2, an exciting string continuo, concealed far beneath the solo bit, comes out explicitly though not bafflingly. Such moments give the audience new reasons not only to enjoy but also appreciate presentations that have been there but have not been rendered in unique and captivating ways.
Meanwhile, Andnes’ performance of the Choral Fantasy comes...
