The Mismeasure of Man & Homosapiens 1900: A Discussion
The question of superiority is not new. For millennia, human groups have competed over control, but to do so superiority of one’s own group, or race, should be justified. Similarly, in what has come to be modern “scientific” endeavors, pseudo-sciences, including primarily craniology and eugenics, have come to justify one race’s, mainly white, superiority over remaining ones, mainly black. In The Mismeasure of Man (Gould) and Homosapiens 1900 (Pizzolante), a detailed account is offered about how science could be used in numerous apparently convincing ways to promote ideas about one race’s superiority over another. In The Mismeasure of Man, Paul Broca (1824-1880), a Professor of Clinical Surgery in Paris, argues Gould, set out to prove, using craniometry methods, how white (male) individuals, Caucasians in particular, are much superior to a range of races at whose bottom is, predictably, blacks, but also women by establishing a correlation between skull size and intelligence.
