Australia is the world’s biggest island and the sixth-largest nation on earth. It has a population of approximately 21 million. Australia is advancing technologically at a rapid rate. The rapid advancement has benefits and disadvantages to the indigenous cultures (Rooksby, & Weckert, 2007, p.67). Australia has diverse culture that reflects the liberal traditions and values of her people. Indigenous people in Australia like the Aboriginal are applying information and communication technology (ICT) in the preservation of their cultures so that future generations can also benefit from them. They use the internet for e-commerce and in organization of community affairs. For illustration, they have created a website that promotes their culture and language. They have also created websites that advance intercultural dialogue and social welfare.
An organization like Centre for Appropriate Technology (CAT) is also assisting indigenous people to secure sustainable livelihood through application of technology. CAT is teaching the locals how to develop products or processes using technology to achieve their aspirations (Koditschek, Cha-Jua, & Neville, 2009, p.88). CAT provides technical services such as technical training to the indigenous people. Application of appropriate technology has made their lives happy and safe. CAT works with the indigenous people in developing basic housing facilities and use of technologically advanced pumps t draw water from wells. Telstra is also a different organization that is interested in applying technology to benefit Indigenous cultures in Australia. They apply designs in different environmental or cultural frameworks to benefit the people. Since the early 90’s, Telstra has extended telecommunication network to several remote areas in Australia to assist the indigenous people in those parts.
