Case Study Aadi (62) has been married to Mary (age 51) for 15 years. Aadi was born in Uganda but was forced to move to the UK following the expulsion of the Ugandan Asian population in 1972. Mary who is white welsh was born and brought up in Cardiff. Mary and Aadi have two children Tomos who is 14 years old, and a daughter Indira who is 8. Tomos was given a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) 4 years ago. This was after years of unsettled behaviour, including fights, tantrums, angry outbursts, and a refusal to attend school regularly. Their daughter Indira is a quiet conscientious child who appears to be doing well at school. Aadi had a stroke last year which has resulted in him losing the use of his right arm and impaired his walking. As a result he has had to give up work as an engineer due to ill health. Over the past 6 months Aadi appears to be low in mood and depressed. Mary has been causing teachers at the school some concern as they believe that she is under the influence of some kind of tranquilising drug when she arrives to pick up Indira. They are aware that the family have been facing financial difficulties since Aadi lost his job. The teachers are already concerned about Tomos as his behaviour has deteriorated over the past month. He has been hitting other children, smoking, and having more difficulties (than usual) concentrating on his school work. Teaching staff at the primary school have also noticed that Indira seems to be losing interest in lessons, and she has been overheard swearing at other pupils. A teacher meets Mary to talk to about Tomos and Indira. They notices how Mary seemed detached but friendly, and she is left feeling concerned given that Mary told her that her family home is becoming neglected. The teacher makes a referral to social services.

Psychological and Sociological Frameworks - Social Workers' Understanding of Family Needs Name Institution Course Code and Title Date Introduction This assignment will look at ways in which social workers can utilize theories in sociology and psychology to understand the needs of the family of a chosen case study, explicitly dwelling on Tomos’s behavior. The discussion will focus on attachment theory and the socio-ecological model to explain how and why they apply to his current situation. The benefits and drawbacks of these theories will be explored by drawing from literature studies to reveal their specific application to the field of social work. Studying lifestyle growth and development theories in humans is essential in understanding one's experiences at both personal and professional levels. Social workers can, therefore, come up with the best ways to intervene for their clients based on individual and family needs. Trainers, mentors, and psychologists apply these theories to help individual clients understand the uniqueness of their growth and development. The importance of communication, leadership, and assessment skills in managing cases is emphasized in this assignment as a foundation for the interdisciplinary practice of social work. Theories and Application The critical theoretical framework used in this assignment will be the Socio-Ecological model and the Attachment Theory, both of which apply to Tomos’s behavior. In the Attachment theory, Bowlby focuses on the psychoanalytic view and how practical the human care given to infants is. Bowlby suggests that the relationship between an infant and the parent sets in as signals. As a result, an actual new bond consisting of affection, warmth, and sensitive care with new capacities in emotions and cognition occurs. Bowlby insists that a parent is the primary caregiver of an infant and is the source of safety and a baseline from which a child grows. He explores the four stages of attachment theory to form this relationship. Exploration of the grief and loss that comes with separating a mother from an infant was Bowlby's primary prompt to develop this theory. He also suggests that the infant-mother relationship forms a mental model that dictates how the child, even later in adulthood, associates with others, builds relationships and explores life's opportunities (Venezia, 2023). Evidence of the relationship between the initial attachment between a parent and a child as an indicator of the child's expected health outcomes and emotions later in life is also provided (Ali et al. 2021). In the application of this theory, children who have been abused, neglected, and experienced losses and sorrows exhibit insecurity and anxiety since they probably did not achieve a sustained and secure attachment during infancy. Tomos, for instance, seems to have lost this attachment in his early life as a result of the wrangles that occurred during the expulsion of Ugandan Asians that his family faced. These principles of attachment theory are also carried to school by children as they promote trust in the availability of their parents and boost their esteem, value, and power to make decisions of their own in the environmental setup (Harlow, 2021). From my perspective, Tomos has grown up in a family where the parents are too busy for him and unavailable to guide him in his adolescent life; hence, he ends up losing his self-esteem and making terrible decisions such as smoking. Bronfenbrenner developed the ecological theory to understand how individuals relate to their surroundings. This model is applied by workers in the social sciences in investigating the way of life and origin of an individual, a society, or a group of people to explain their attribution to success, failure, or ability to cope with a particular environment. This aligns with research done by Ramsey et al. in 2022 on theories of social and ecologic learning in the practice of the social field of science and helps in understanding the case of Tomos. This theory helps social workers provide an environment supporting human health, growth, satisfaction, and social activity. It provides professionals in social work with an insight into the experiences of individuals from their historical, cultural, and societal backgrounds and thus tailors the most effective interventions for them. It also provides a life model through which these workers know how to assess and treat individuals based on their difficulties in the transition, any traumatic experiences they have gone through, and environmental influences on their behavior (Ramsey et al. 2022).
