In the world presently many organisations have relied on groups and teams in problem solving and decision making. As stated by Steiner, (1972) in order for these groups to operate at optimal levels then their resources must be coordinated and utilised very efficiently. Hackman, 1987 also adds on to argue that the groups must not only major on acquiring numerous resources but they must ensure that the resources are utilised to the maximum. The resources required include individual skills, knowledge, and competence which are known as proficiency. A deductive logic game known as Mastermind was developed to study the outcome of member proficiency on decision making and performance of the group, this study involved 360 students admitted at University of Illinois to take a course in introductory social psychology.
The game involves a deductive rule-learning dilemma. 4 sequential situations with 6 probable values i.e. literally defined by 6 diverse colours define the problem traditionally these generate 64 or 1296 patterns. Laughlin, Bonner, & Altermatt, 1999 describe this as the standard hard level that is more or less difficult.
