According to Duncan et al., (2018), it is important for parents, carers, educators, and healthcare professionals to be conversant with these developmental processes in order to support children accordingly. Developmental Stages of a Child from Birth to 19 Years The first stage is infancy, which begins from birth through age 2 and includes fast physical body and mental growth. Infants advance through reflexive movements that lead to voluntary control of their bodies enabling them to roll over and eventually master the skills of sitting up and walking (Duncan et al., 2018). Language development begins by producing sounds, then to first words around 12 months and to simple sentences by the age of 2 years. The children also start getting attached to their carers. Children experience continuous physical growth together with improved motor skills during early childhood, which lasts from age 2 to age 6. During this phase children develop fine skills like drawing and using utensils to eat. They start showing preoperational thinking, where they act on their thoughts and have magical thinking (Duncan et al., 2018). Language abilities also grow with a vocabulary of thousands of words. Children start forming relationships with their peers while practising cooperative games. The phase of middle childhood between the ages of 6 and 11 years, physical growth continues steadily, and cognitive development to operational thinking allows for logical reasoning. The development of academic competencies, including reading, writing and mathematics, takes place. Social development transitions to peer-focused friendships that follow established guidelines (Duncan et al., 2018). Children evolve their personal identity and start evaluating their worth against that of their classmates. The adolescence stage, which is between the ages of 11and 19 years, is the stage for spurt physical growth due to the increase in the sex hormones. During this phase, teenagers experience sexual development while defining who they are. They develop formal operational thinking that enables them to perform abstract reasoning, hypothetical thinking, and complex problem-solving (Sawyer et al., 2018). In adolescence social relationships advance to include strong peer dependence while romantic bonds develop between individuals. Elements of Child Development Biological factors affect a child’s development. The genes children get from their parents determine their physical characteristics, certain cognitive abilities, and even their behaviour.
