Reflective Report
Introduction
The subsequent part of this paper is my reflection on I want to incorporate this idea of emotional shoes. This is also an overview of the stages I have gone through in reaching the level am at present in relation to this idea. This was initiated by my past and current emotional experiences.
Past Images and experiences that have influenced My Work
A Lifetime of images that depict life expressions has greatly influenced me with regards to the idea of emotional life. My family roots are in United Kingdom, and many artists in this region work instinctively with readily available materials. In other words, they use simple materials to relay information. An artist could use common elements such as utensils, clothes, nature and so on to illustrating many aspects in life. This also influenced me to use simple and common elements as in shoes to portray various expressions of emotions. This owes to the fact that shoes are common elements which majority of people are not only conversant but are in possession of. The expression of my idea depicts an example of how simple materials, in this case shoes could be used to illustrate information in different aspects.
The reason why I ventured into this idea of emotional shoes in relaying emotions is that it also depicts the moods and attitudes of my parents in life. There were times when they could be happy, sad, panicking or meditating about some personal issues, so this could be expressed as a psychological heritage. I admired the seriousness and ego of my parents when they were performing their duties as well as when they were at their jovial mood. My father especially clearly worked in the field, which he loved and could appear happy while in his duties. My mother was also known for working things “outside the box”. Even though she did not always depict happy expressions as my father, or as me, she was an exceptional mother figure. This unconventionality became normality to me and this is what shaped my idea.
My realization of the supposed idea as being influenced by my parents moods came about when a friend remarked that the various expressions I had created on shoes looked peculiar to him and many other people. Although I did not value the comments at first, this gave me a new insight on why I am inclined to pursue this idea and why my presentation will eventually look exemplary. I can assure you that the skills in doing such kind of a job are in my DNA.
Bond Antony, (2002) observes that, art can change the way one looks at the world. For instance, the pictures outlined above are all derived from the shoes perspective, but they depict different meaning. Likewise, anyone could use different ways, tools and things to illustrate different information.
Salcedo (1997) observes that, in illustrating expressions, it becomes easier to critique the absurd claims that are mostly made for art in catalog essays, however, he rejected the assumption that the work of art is merely in arousing aesthetic pleasure and nothing else. Salcedo goes on that art and artwork should be based on reality and enhance our understanding on how we view things. My idea of emotional shoes is based on this understanding.
My current Experiences in the Progression of my artwork
At one time, I would experience panic because, I never expected people to appreciate my skills, but they came to appreciate it in a great deal. This has made me to be enthusiastic on the value of the skills which are depicted in this project. Before starting this kind of a project, I asked myself on how expressions such as change of moods, sadness, and happiness, panic and so on could be relayed without using many words. I came up with an idea that common elements such as clothes, shoes, utensils, houses and so on could provide a platform in which these ideas could be relayed.
In this project, I was able to go a long Maltzman’s idea that, it does not matter what one does, as long as the activity is recognizable and accepted. I derive my inspiration from my father from my parents who are role models in my life. The absence of similar works by artists provided a challenge to me in relaying different expressions on common elements. Encouragement from my colleagues and those who admired my work is also another source of my inspiration.
From constant practice in the skills, incorporation of ideas from my fans and colleagues, I was able to make great improvement with regard to the project. It is no surprise that many people call me an art professional though I am not one.
For an artist to make a style which can be used as a trademark is not an easy affair, but it is very important for any serious artists, as observes Kindersley, (2011, P1). For me, it took a long time in nurturing this skill, which could be recognized easily by many people. As I practiced consistently, I developed a style that was distinct from many and hence it became my signature. In the present, many people will tell me that they recognize my work when they find it anywhere else, irrespective of the content it harbors. To me, that is amazing.
Why I am Attracted to Artwork
Gundappa, in his article “mediation photography” postulates that, something one enjoys or likes will help the person see life in different perspective. Additionally, it helps the person take responsibility in many life aspects (Gundappa, 2008, p1).
