Critical Geographical Analysis: Roxham Road
Introduction
Roxham Road is situated in Quebec. It is not a mere place but is a geographical unit that puts Canada’s immigration rules under scrutiny. Hence, this place reflects the political controversy, putting Canada at the center of the geopolitical limelight on the elusive immigration phenomenon. Roxham Road acts as a conduit for immigration, allowing asylum and immigrants to cross from the U.S to Canada. What is the overall relevance of the Rhoxam Road in the concept of immigration? Does it symbolize a clash of selfishness and humanity? Roxham Road has recently been in the news with irregular border crossers, especially outside the official port entry. In this paper, I argue that Roxham Road, as a geographical region, spotlights the Canadian immigration practice, but Canada must strike a delicate balance between ensuring preserving the integrity of its borders through immigration laws and legitimacy of immigration. What is Canada’s stand on the rights of refugees and immigrants? How does Canada balance its constitutional rights of protecting its territory against unauthorized entries versus being empathic and considerate to immigrant and refugee rights?

Does immigrant hold rights to cross Roxham Road? Do they hold any legitimacy? Browsing such Roxham Road, are they not infringing Canada’s policy on migration? The legality of migration across Roxham Road is centric to this debate. Mayrand & Smith-Grégoire (2018) asked valid questions: Who should qualify for asylum, or refugee requiring protection, under domestic and international law? In contrast, critics think that the irregular movement by migrants across Roxham Road represents an attempt to circumvent Canada’s policies on the refugee. In a country with a significant history of immigration, Canada has often supported a better immigration policy that makes immigrants to Canada have par for the course (Mayrand & Smith-Grégoire, 2018). Therefore, the leniency in implementing restrictive border migration policies accounts for increased abuse by irregular immigrants through back-door to the country. As a result, a disproportionately high number of refugees' claims of irregular migration have been identified, but few have been rejected. Thus, the cumulative impact of irregular and regular immigration risks undermines migration altogether. The overall Canadian laws and its rights to protect its borders and citizens remain under threat from the dysfunctional border migration phenomenon. The irregular immigrants manifested by ‘false’ ‘asylum seekers and refugees represent an assault on international laws on migrations and Canada’s legal blueprints and policies on border migration. What about the legitimate refugees and asylum seekers? The irregular migrations and those who cross Roxham Road under the pretext of being refugees and asylum seekers disenfranchise legitimate persons who are genuine refugees or asylum seekers. Therefore, Roxham Road significantly symbolizes the illegal immigration between U.S and Canada that undermines Canadian’s migration policies. It also represents unjustified encroachment into Canadian’s habitat of heritage and livelihoods. In addition, it jeopardizes systems that allow the migration of asylum seekers, refugees, and legitimate migrants. Roxham Road is about immigration in Canada, which denotes geographical immigration distribution.
Many are concerned about such migration towards Canada. But what is causing such population mobility? It is critical to understand the primary drivers underpinning irregular and regular migrations across Roxham Road. Can such causes of unnecessary immigration be controlled? or what is so attractive about Canada? Push-Pull Factors either push people to leave the country or attract them towards a specific country. Factors such as inadequate resources, war, famine, unemployment, and poverty can elicit migratory patterns to other countries or regions. Countries with broader opportunities such as adequate resources, peace are pretty attractive as migrant population destinations. The more land in Canada, more labor opportunities, and being part of global networks of capitalism, including demand, resources, and is considered part of global geographies of peace and calm, underpins increased tendencies for regular and irregular migrants into Canada. The repulsive and attractive factors undergoing migration were recently observed.
