American Indian Cultural Images
Course Objectives:
1. Explain how inaccurate images of American Indians in popular culture marginalize various tribal nations as historical relics, rather than vibrant contemporary culture. (analysis essays). (Core 1. Marginalization. Explain theories and histories of marginalization and discrimination and their effects on contemporary events and future implications.)
2. Critically evaluate American Indian perspectives concerning the production of media representations of American Indians. (bibliography, powerpoint)
3. Understand how American Indian communities produce self-representations (essays). (Core 3. Collective Identities. Describe the evolution and social construction of social identities)
Requirements
Required Text: Assigned articles and videos are posted online in the Canvas course shell.
Assignments: All coursework uses Chicago style citation (notes and bibliography). 12 point font and single spaced. Please take care with all writing for the course. If you are would like to improve your writing skills consult the Writing Center on campus, or the academic tutoring center. Late work is not accepted, please work ahead of deadlines. 1.Syllabus quiz. 10 possible points, MC/TF questions on the syllabus, one-hour limit. Due before midnight Sunday, August 26th.
2. Introduction. 10 possible points. Questions for the 1 page essay to introduce yourself to the class are listed in the assignment module, photos are encouraged. 8 possible points are based on the essay, 2 possible points are based on your response to at least one other student posting. Due before midnight Sunday, August 26th. Sample Student Essay Document file includes sample Introduction Essay.
3.Weekly Analysis Essays. 70 possible points, 10 possible points per essay x 7 weeks. Analysis essays should provide your summation and response to assigned readings and videos for the assigned week. Article citations should appear in-text parenthesis (Author Last name, page Number). There are 7 weekly short essays (1 to 1 and1/2 page minimum) to complete before each Sunday at midnight online in Canvas. Grading rubrics can be found at the end of the syllabus. 12 point font, single-spaced. Essays are due before midnight on Sundays during their assigned week.
