Against nature opens with the hired decorators of Des Esseintes, home. They take many privileges at hand and continue with their endless ordeals of ransacking his house. The decorators are tongue-tied on the nature of the individual he is, based on the rugged and bygone troubles of his past. Conditions of finances stretched the characters to extremes, to the extent they had to sell some of their property to make ends meet. Esseintes is growing frail in life and invites people to an emotional dinner before his journey to Paris. Later, it is noticed that his medical condition was changing, and he had to keep to a restricted and monitored lifestyle. Some included his diet that did not have alcohol and beverages except milk. He had weird and outrageous dreams of how he could make his life a reality, something that could be viewed as inconsistent with what he was doing to achieve the goals. He later hated himself and all he dreamt of without success. His religious life was as well in doubt, as he never kept a constant faith and followed what he believes was right according to his ideas of worship. Moments of grace mentioned by some religious teachers like Lacordaire never made much sense to him, despite his understanding of all these pronouncements. Chapter 8 closes by describing the details of a disease that has swept the region they stayed in and caused a lot of misfortune to the people. These issues about Esseintes and his society provoked much thought about the work.
