HISTORY RESPONSE PAPER Name: Course Title: Date: Part 1 It is important to note that when Thomas Jefferson contested and won the 1800 Presidential elections, the post of the cabinet Secretary of State was served by James Madison before he was elected to succeed Jefferson as the president of United States. Most importantly Madison inherited or the serious economic as well as foreign relations problems that were related to embargo and non-intercourse act; which were developed and implemented as a result of the actions related hostile nature of Great Britain and France. These laws also incapacitated foreign trade and almost made it impossible between the two countries; this further affected American businesses. Great Britain had irritated, provoked and annoyed the Americans by impressing the American sailors; they took them from ships belonging to the United States and forcing them into the British Navy where they were considered as British deserters. Most importantly, the Americans we are further forced to fire on the United States ship, the Chesapeake, directly on the American waters, which resulted in deaths of three sailors while many others were injured. This document is important since it has provided essential insights about foreign relations between the United States and Great Britain in the early 1880s. It is Keynoting that the attack of American ship by Great Britain demonstrated the kind of unity among the Americans; the impressment of the Americans caused outrage in different states and cities such as in Portsmouth and Virginia; as a result of these activities different resolutions were passed among the Americans which led to the denouncement of British fleet and also rejecting any resupply as well as repairing of Royal Navy ships in the port. Most critically, as the news of the British spread throughout the United States, the public remained unified by its resentment and anger. Initially, former president Jefferson had been quoted several saying that although there were many crimes committed by British which had the potential to cause war, there was none that had unified the Americans more than the attack on Chesapeake.[Dennis Merrill and Thomas G. Accessed September 23, 2019] This document was relatively short, and it was also clear to understand since it provided facts as well as the solutions that followed after the impressment of American sailors by Britons. The document has clearly indicated how the American government chose to file a formal protest where it called for an apology as well as a full reparation of the impressed Americans, and it also set to obtain assurances that the British government would not attack the American seamen. The response to this document was chosen because it would reflect the power struggles the United States has had with other European countries. Additionally, the document can also provide insights about how the United States responded to the international crisis whenever the country found itself in such situations with other nations. It was however surprising how President Jefferson stressed and intensified the issue; by signing the official order on 1807 which demanded the British vessels be removed from the American waters and later on there was a mobilization of militia-men who were required to enforce the order.
