After the Indian and the French war that occurred between the year 1754 and the year 1763, the American territory that was under the control of the Britain expanded greatly and it is reported that Britain had to look for a way of paying off their war debt. The solution to this was the imposition of increased taxes to the colonialists so as to ensure that more revenues were collected. In ensuring that the Native Americans are actually kept on their side as well as preventing any of the unnecessary violence that could occur between the Indians and the whites, Britain came up with the opposition of the Proclamation Line of the year 1763 which actually forbade any of the colonialists from settlement into the new territory west of the Appalachian Mountains, as well as requiring any of the settlers who already occupying the western side of the mountain to move out and settle on the east.
With the newly imposed taxes and restrictions, there was increased political tension, economic tension, as well as the ideological relations that existed between North America and Britain. The British government did not except such a reaction from North America and especially in the form of resistance since they believed that they were weak and could not organize any resistance. The American colonies were actually divided into different categories that included Tories or Loyalties and Whigs or Patriots. However, majority of the colonists desired independence from the mother country, there were some hesitation.
