American Revolution
American Revolution, alternatively known as the Revolutionary War, lasted for eight years, from the year 1775 to 1883. It came about because of tension that was growing between the colonial government that represented the British Imperial and thirteen colonies of Great Britain from North America. Problems between the British militiamen and the colonialists in April of 1775 in Lexington and Concord brought about the War of the armed forces. The rebel forces were already participating fully in the War as they desired to attain independence by the next summer. In the year 1778, France joined the American Revolution by defending the colonialists. This brought a twist and turned the first Civil War into an international battle. The Americans triumphed in the year 1783 with the help of France. The Continental Army Forces, with the help of France, made the British give up in the year 1781.[Frazer, Gregg. "The American Revolution: Not a Just War." Journal of Military Ethics 14, no. 1 (2015):]
Causes of the American Revolution
The journey to the Revolutionary War started many years before the 1775 breaking point. Many events and situations pushed the colonialists to a point where they could no longer bear the rule for British Imperialists, forcing them to fight for independence. Tension had been slowly building up, for more than a decade before 1775 when the American Revolution officially began, between the British authorities and the colonialists.
The first one was the French and Indian War that lasted for nine years, between 1754 and 1953. It happened in New France as well as the different American colonies. These colonies sided with the original tribes, the Natives, in America. The British forces played an extraordinary role during and after the War. They helped to fight the War as well as protecting the colonies after the French and Indian War. However, the British decided to start taxing the native Americans to get money to pay for their (British) troops because of the services they were offering.
The establishment of new taxes and laws was another reason for the War. Before 1764, the British government left the Americans to govern themselves. However, they introduced and started implementing new taxes and new laws in the year 1764. Among the laws they introduced and started implementing included the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act, the Currency Act, and the Quartering Act. These new taxes and laws were not received well by the Americans who swore not to pay taxes to the British since they did not have representatives in the British Parliament. They even adopted a motto No Taxation without Representation.
The hostile reception of the British introduced taxes and laws sparked protests from many colonialists. This became another reason for revolution. In the year 1765, there was a new group that was formed in Boston called Sons of Liberty. The group spread very fast across other colonies. Many colonialists were killed in Boston while protesting, and the event was named The Boston Massacre. A new tax was imposed on tea by the British in 1773, and more protests were even witnessed in Boston. Many patriots protested this by boarding ships and dumped their tea in the ocean. It was named the Boston Tea Party. The aftermath of the Boston Tea Party was the introduction of more new laws to punish the natives for dumping their tea in water. The natives named these new rules Intolerable Acts.[Smith, "Food rioters and the American Revolution." In Colonial America and the Early Republic, pp. 253-286 (2017)]
The British government completely shut down the Boston Port from trade by blockading the harbor by using their ships. This was among the Intolerable Acts called the Boston Port Act. This brought punishment to all people who were living in Boston, whether a loyalist or a patriot. This act was received with displeasure from both residents and non-residents, who feared the same to be imposed on them. This prompted the need for a revolution. Another reason was the growing unity among colonies. The newly introduced laws and taxes brought the colonies together and strengthened their ties. Many colonists volunteered to help Boston during the blockade. Most colonies too decided to join the Sons of Liberty in fighting for their rights. This went against the British expectation that the laws would divide the Americans.[Smith, “Food rioters and the American Revolution." In Colonial America and the Early Republic, pp. 253-286 (2017)]
The First Continental Congress also prompted a need for a revolution. As a direct response to the Intolerable Acts, twelve out of the thirteen colonies selected and sent representatives to the First Continental Congress. They decided to re-appeal the Intolerable Acts by sending a copy of their concerns to King George III, of which they never received any feedback. They also resorted to boycotting consuming goods from the British. Eventually, the Revolutionary War began. The British government ordered their soldiers in Massachusetts to disarm the rebels from America as well as taking in their leadersin1775. A war emerged between the two groups on April 19 of 1775. This is how and when the American Revolution was conceived and born.[Smith, "Food rioters and the American Revolution." In Colonial America and the Early Republic, pp. 253-286 (2017)]
