Question 1: Artwork Analysis
Joana is a Lisbon-based artist whose work is mainly based on the themes of appropriation, de-contextualization, and subversion of objects that are pre-extinct as well as daily realities. One of the most important artworks done by Joana was Lavanda or Lavander, which she did in 2008. The work is an effective representation of Marcel Duchamp’s 1917 Fountain. It was used only by men and in her work she covered it using crochet patterns. Crochet patterns was a material which was traditionally associated with women. The fact that the Fountain was only used by men but Joana uses crochet patterns to cover it helps in bringing out her theme clearly.
In the artwork, Joana uses her wit in art to effectively interpret Marcel Duchamp’s 1917 Fountain. As mentioned, this Fountain was solely used by men. However, Joana covered it using crochet patterns which are colorful and manmade. The material she uses is mainly associated with the domestic environment and work that is done by woman. In this case, Joana uses this approach as a way of effectively exploring the relation between popular and erudite culture, as well as between modernity and tradition. The color patterns used were traditionally associated with women, but they have been used to cover a Fountain that is used by men. Through this, Joana shows the extent to which modernity has overtaken tradition. In a traditional setup, such colors and patterns could not be used to cover something that was used by men. However, people are changing due to changes in modernity. The choice of color also shows that the society is moving away from popular culture due to the erudite that they are gaining. Most people in the current world are adopting modernity, which is overriding tradition and most of the cultural boundaries are being abolished. In this case, Joana shows that people are moving away from the belief that a certain color and patterns is associated with women.

Further, the art work is unique because it stands out as one of a kind piece that the artist has ever created. Further, it was in a high demand when it was produced because it was a limited edition. The original works which were available in the market were created with the direct involvement of Joana, making the edition further special. There were around less than 150 pieces in total which were produced for this work. The main reason that Joana decided to make it a limited edition was because the work contained simple yet crucial information that could be passed on from one generation to another once it had been presented through the limited pieces.
The reproduction of the original work that was done by the artist requires one to obtain authorization from the artist’s estate or studio. However, this was a special edition in which the artist did not have a direct role in the original production of the work. However, multiple pieces were produced with the authorization of the artist’s estate, but the artist was still not involved in direct reproduction of the copies.
Further, ephemera are notable from the production of this work, and the manner in which Joana did it. In this regard, items are related to the artist, and they were created and manufactured for a limited and specific use. This includes memorabilia, exhibition materials, as well as autographs. These features make this edition of Joana’s artwork unique and different from the rest. However, she also uses the approach to ensure that she communicates her themes and clearly brings out the relationship between popular culture and erudite, as well as the relationship between modernity and culture.
