Tuning a Database
Database tuning refers to a group of activities used to change the design of a database. This can be an incredibly difficult task especially for large corporations. This is because for large organizations, small changes in the structure of a database can have large implications on the rest of the data. Some of the reasons to know the process include the fact that often, the people responsible for tuning may be in a different building and under a different reporting system. One may therefore require the services of a Database administrator.
One of the things to consider when tuning a database is the database optimization in the codebases indexes. Indexing is a good and effective way of tuning. However, it is often neglected during development. An index refers to the data structure which improves the speeds making it possible to have data retrieval going fast in the databases. It usually looks up the records rapidly and efficiently (Vallath, 2014). In addition, it enables one to select and order their own rows faster than ever before. Another use of the indexes is that they are used to define a unique index or a primary value. The purpose of this is to make sure that no other column has the same value.
Another tuning methodology is the use of execution plans. These can also be used to create indexes. However, their main function is to display the data retrieval methods chosen by the SQL. The display is usually graphical. To tune, one should also avoid coding loops. Good knowledge of SQL database management is required here. From there, the tasks become easy and ne can easily complete them.
An example of SQL is creating a table. A table can be created to observe any information related to any of the fields that is desired by the people. Usually it is specific to the data being used and optimized. For example, in a weather company, the table may include different fields that measure the different aspects of weather. These include the temperature, rainfall amounts, humidity and the intensity of sunshine. These can then be used by the people to come up with what they desire from the table. Another example of SQL is creating a view. This is usually a derived table to perform certain functions depending of the nature of the database. The final example is inserting rows (Ramacher, Bodagala, Dageville, Tsukerman, Vivian and Ziauddin, 2015). This usually follows the table and the views that are created in the database for SQL From the above it is clear what tuning a database means in SQL. The two main methodologies that are used in this case have been discussed and understood in detail...
