The word ‘impossible’ in today’s world is rarely a surprising factor. Talk about flying off from jet planes, stellar 3 dimensional movies to extracting images from mars – nothing is NOT impossible now. This brings to the question of accessing Google or facebook while you’re travelling, I mean with the fast-paced goings internet access anywhere above or beyond water is a necessity! So now, aircrafts have embedded the system of internet which means anyone can access internet when up in the air.
With the technology of Wifi, all of this is now operational. Wifi stands for Wireless Fidelity which is the technique used by computers and laptops to be able to connect to the internet without wires. Employing the same technique the aircrafts have internet in the aircrafts. The best and easiest way to understand how wifi works in the aircrafts is that there is a router or base-unit (a tower) on the ground which sends signals up in the air through a satellite or directly and gets deciphered into binary lingo which is captured and then processed by the antenna’s on the laptops and other technological devices (Goopal Deepa 2010).
This air to ground technology in technical terms is also referred to as EV-DO technology. When in the air, the laptop communicates with the wi-fi hub on the airplane and then this hub communicates with the towers on the ground to be able to provide internet (Brain Marshall 2008)
Not all the aircrafts in the US have the permission to employ wifi though. Aircell’s one of them and have been authorized by FAA and FCC to have in flight broadband communications. “Below is the network’s summary:
100 or fewer EVDO antennas across the US providing coast-to-coast coverage.
AirCell broadband uses an EV-DO (Rev. A) air-to-ground link, which provides peak data rates up to 3.1Mbps from t...
