Internet-based conferencing is as safe as face-to-face meetings
In this paper, I agree that internet-based conferencing is just as safe as face-to-face meetings. Advances in technology such as Whispers, granular access permissions, SSL/TSL, and Private Messages have allowed web internet-based meeting to be just as secure as face-to-face meetings. Moreover, the ability of bringing these web-conferencing platforms in-house closes the 3rd party trust loophole. All a conference leader has to do is to simply load a web application on his/her internal server and have his/her users connect to it, which will allow end-to-end control of the conference. Furthermore, some web conferencing solutions such as Cisco WebEX and Adobe Connect have end-to-end encryption and granular access permissions. In essence, internet-based conferencing has sufficient security features which make it as safe as face-to-face meetings (Knapp, 2014).
Some of the in-built security measures of internet-based conferencing include: SSL-encrypted website; strong passwords; end-to-end 128-bit AES encryption; safety-oriented user interface; as well as automatic inactive time-out (Warren, 2011). Many businesses are choosing to reduce their budgets for conferencing and meeting in favor of web-conferencing or meeting online. This helps the companies to save money. Even though internet-based conferences are usually useful and productive, they cannot always replace face-to-face conference. In general, meetings take place face-to-face, and as companies became more globalized, it became essential for managers to travel in order to attend these meetings. Even though necessary, this travel was a major expenditure for a business. A six-person meeting carried out in face-to-face is more than 7 times more costly compared to web-conferencing (Knapp, 2014).
SSL Encryption and Invite Only features
Nearly all web-conferencing platforms require one to run a java applet or download a client, which will connect to the conferencing server. In order to secure the link between the server and client, two application layer security protocols, Transport Layer Security and Secure Sockets Layer are used. These two cryptographic protocols were developed in order to provide communication security over the internet (Warren, 2011).
Effective online meeting and web-conferencing tools such as GoToMeeting utilize particularly strong Secure Sockets Layer encryption on their websites. It is of note that the administrative panel that members use is protected with the use of the most recent in SSL technology, which uses strong login information and passwords. It also performs activity logging in addition to standard audits of network securi...
