My RepresentativeThe Democracy in America
America has a federal democratic republic type of government that divides the continent into 50 states, each being governed by people who are voted by the people. People are given the free will to choose their state representatives and the composition of the senate. This system allows people to decide on who they think will run the country and states better. Since the 1800s, America has two major political parties that dominate the government (De Toqueville, 1835). Democratic and Republican parties have been winning the American elections with their political bets that have the same ideologies and platforms as their respective parties. Below are the political people who hold positions in the house of representatives and the senate.
The Representatives
The current senators Kirsten Gillibrand won the 2018 elections while Charles Schumer won the 2017 senate elections (The New York Times; CNN). The house of representatives member, Jose E. Serano, won the 2017 election and has been representing the 15th district, New York (The New York Times).
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand won the 2018 election against Farley, with 67% of votes. She has since been sitting in the senate and will finish her term in 2024. According to the govtrack.us, Gillbrand is up to serve until 2025 unless reelected in the next election. She previously served as New York's 20th district representative, under the democratic party, back in 2007 to 2009.
Kirsten Gillibrand is a lawyer and politician from Brunswick New York. She is married to Jonathan Gillibrand with two sons, Theo and Henry Gillibrand. Gillibrand graduated magna cum laude in 1988 and became a lawyer in 1991. Before becoming a politician, the senator was once a law clerk, an attorney, and a special counsel. Kirsten Gillibrand has sat in the Senate Agin Committee where she investigated frauds on behalf of seniors. Also, she has taken part in the Environment and Public Works Committee as well as the Senate Agriculture Committee and Senate Committee on Armed Services (govtrack.us; gillibrand.senate.gov/about.).
Gillibrand's ideologies and platforms reflect on her senate memberships, the bills she has sponsored, authored, and passed. She mainly puts effort into agriculture, national security, public works, and the environment. The senator has been advocating for equal salary, secured country and states, and accountability (govtrack.us).
Gillibrand addresses issues and topics like education, gun reform, agriculture, women's health, and many more. On agriculture, Kirsten believes that supporting fam families and the agriculture industry can revive the agricultural economy of New York. On the women's health, she agrees that women should decide for their well being without being dictated by political issues. Kirsten also believes that clean water and air may sustain the environment and keep it away from harmful causes (gillibrand.senate.gov/issues).
Senator Charles Schumer
Senator Charles Schumer belongs in the same party as Senator Gillibrand, the Democratic party. He won the 2017 senate election against Long, Wilson, and Merced, with 70.6% of votes (The New York Times). Currently, he is the senate minority leader. Unlike Gillibrand, Schumer has been in the senate longer; his record dates back in 1999. Schumer's position is reserved until 2023 if not reelected in the next election. The senator's previous political position was a representative of the 9th congressional district of New York back in 199 to 1998. He was also the representative for the 10th district from 1983 to 1992, and the 16th district from 1981 to 1982 (govtrack.us).
Charles Schumer was born in 1950 in Brooklyn New York. He finished his degree at Harvard and went to Harvard Law School and became a lawyer in 1974. Schumer is married to Iris Weinshall, with two daughters Jessica and Alison. Schumer has entered politics after law school by being elected the New York state assembly. This was the start o...
