Define “dialectic” and discuss how Socratic dialogue differs from other conversations.
Dialectic is the process of investigating the truth of opinions and contradictions through discussions and reasoned argumentation. Individuals with different points of view engage in dialogue where they provide arguments, counterarguments, propositions, and counter-propositions.
Socratic dialogue supports shared dialogue in learning where the teacher and students push the dialogue, and there are questions and answers. For example, Socrates engaged in a conversation with a Greek slave boy lacking formal education and asked various questions. Through the approach, there are arguments presented through questions and answers. Dialogue is necessary as there are discussions between two or more people, which are necessary to clarify thoughts, examine the thoughts and statements. Socratic dialogue is a form of philosophical inquiry that helps find the truth and value when the arguments are investigated.
Socratic dialogue is a guided process with sequenced questions to better understand thoughts by discussing moral and philosophical problems. Other conversations can be back and forth without necessarily having questions and answers. Conversations also tend to be informal and do not focus on guided processes, and people do not necessarily provide arguments and reasoning. Yet, in Socratic dialogue, there is a focus on understanding the issues by examining arguments and eliminating explanations that show contradictions.

Socratic dialogue emphasizes thoughtful dialogue and open discussion to understand people's beliefs and question their assumptions. The approach would determine whether the therapist and the clients engage in an open dialogue, which is useful for gathering data.
