Notable Life of Wangari Maathai Name Instructor Course Date Notable Life of Wangari Maathai Wangari Maathai is well known for her influence on sustainable development, peace, and democracy. I chose her as a notable woman since she was the first African woman to be honored with the Nobel Peace Prize. She fronts to fight for ecologically viable cultural, social, and economic prosperity in Kenya and Africa. Her approach embodied human rights, specifically women's rights and democracy. Even though she thinks globally, she wants to face out the problems from the roots. As such, she was up in arms against the oppressive regime in Kenya. Wangari was born on April 1st, 1940, in Nyeri, central Kenya. She lived a legacy-worthy life till September 2011, when she passed on in Nairobi while undergoing treatment in her county of residence. The Nobel Prize laureate winner grew up in Nyeri County, Kenya. She emanated from the famous Kikuyu tribe of Kenya and went to St. Cecilia Intermediary for her primary education. In 1964, she received a scholarship from the Kennedy Airlift program to study in the United States. She attended Mount St. Scholastica College in the United States (Benedictine College) for her bachelor's degree in biology. She continued with her education and acquired a master's degree in biological sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.
