According to Isvan (2019), a license is a legal authority granted by a state to personals practicing within a defined scope of practice (SOP). In this regard, certification represents the educational and professional competencies required for an individual to be licensed within the defined SOP. In California, four primary levels of certification are required for actual certification and licensure for professionals venturing into substance abuse SOP (HSE, n.d.). Among the four, the current paper discusses the Substance Use Disorder Certified Counsellor (SUDCC) offered by the California Association of DUI Treatment (CADTP). The discussion focuses on several credits, core courses, hours of training, internship, and supervision, and a section on a biblical worldview.
State of Substance Abuse in California and Relevance of SUDCC
In California, 50% of people over the age of 12 reported use of alcohol in the past month. A further 20% reported using Marijuana in the past year (Valentine & Brassil, 2022). Despite these figures, only 10% of people who said SUD in the past year had access to treatment amidst soaring overdose deaths from amphetamines, psychostimulants, and opioids.
