Structuralism: A Dominant Philosophy in the "Letter to White Queers"
1. Dominant Philosophy Assignment: 30%
For this assignment, students will find an example of a dominant philosophy that influences social work as discussed in classes two and three (e.g., modernism, structuralism, post-conventionalism, and decolonization). An example may be a short sample of text that reflects the central ideas of the philosophy (from a journal article, website, song, poem, story or another source) or a photo/video of a building, space, action, piece of art or other representation. Along with a copy or link to the example, students will submit a 2–3-page written argument for why they think it is a strong example of a particular dominant philosophy. The assignment will consist of:
a) A cover page with your name, the date, the course number, and the source of your example (web link, book citation etc.)
b) A copy of your example (1 page) or link to your example (you may include the link on the title page)
c) An explanation of one dominant philosophy AND why you think yours is a strong example of it. (2 pages)
d) A brief introduction and conclusion (one paragraph each)
Students should double space, edit their work, and use a 12-point font in Times New Roman. No additional references (from journals or books) are necessary, but if you do include them, be sure to use proper 7th edition APA formatting.
