Thomas Jefferson’s “creed” is believed to represent America’s actual identity. This creed seeks to unite the people of America. This concept has received widespread support, and many academics have contributed to it. However, Samuel Huntington may have oppositely taken the creed, causing division. Samuel Huntington believed Hispanics would cause division in the United States (Huntington, 2004, p. 31). Fethi Keles, on the other hand, emphasizes that Huntington’s article, The Hispanic Challenge, was vague and biased. Furthermore, Keles believes Huntington has distorted the truth about Hispanics and their arrival in America (Keles, 2007, p. 141). Thus, Huntington’s article has several flaws and inconsistencies.
According to Huntington, the arrival of Hispanics threatens the unity and oneness of the United States. He believes these people will cause linguistic, cultural, and social divisions. He considers these people to be those who do not support America and its values, religious beliefs, or culture (Huntington, 2004, p. 30). Huntington concentrated on the geographical location of the group. He claims that despite moving to America, these people maintain contact and communication with their families. This reason is why these people will never have the country’s spirit. It is because they are still connected to the values and culture of their previous land. Therefore, he refers to these individuals as outliers. Meanwhile, Keles contends that these individuals will promote diversity and inclusion rather than causing division.
