Essay Instructions:
Understanding how your social network is connected to various professional networks is an important step in identifying people who may be able to help you in your professional career. Sometimes it’s all about information—somebody knows somebody who knows about a job opening up. Learn to identify your professional network, and also learn where your network is weak and brainstorm how to strengthen that area.
What is this assignment?
This assignment asks you to first think about who you know and where they work. Make a list of all of your connections: family, friends, acquaintances, classmates, etc. Be sure to include people who are members of the same clubs or organizations you belong to.
Why is it important? How will this help me in my future career?
Understanding your professional network will help you to “spread your net” so that when you’re looking for a job, you can let lots of people know who may be connected with organizations or fields in which you want to develop a career.
You should also find out what professional organizations are connected to your career interests, and see if they have conferences near your area.
