M-SLP4- Organizational Culture & Diversity. How would you describe the culture of your organization?
Prepare a 3-page paper, not including title page and references
Continue making journal entries about applying the background material to your workplace environment.
In this SLP assignment, the focus is on organizational culture. As in the other modules, your journal entries should focus on questions suggested by the background material:
For example:
• How would you describe the culture of your organization?
• What are its defining characteristics?
• How strong is the organizational culture at your organization?
• To what extent is the organization’s culture shared by employees and managers?
As in the previous modules’ SLP assignments, each of your journal entries should be a paragraph or so (one-half page in length) and you should make 5 journal entries over the course of the module.
Also, as in the previous SLP assignments, before you submit your journal entries, review what you have written, and add in-text citations from the background material as appropriate. Also include a reference page at the end of your paper that gives the references that correspond to the in-text citations that you have used. For completeness, don’t forget to add a title page. You should include at least two high-quality references from the Trident Online Library that are about concepts in your journal entries.

How would you describe the culture of your organization?
I would describe the culture of my organization as people-oriented. I believe there is a committed focus by the organization on the affairs of the employees as it recognizes it as its most valuable asset. The workplace environment is characterized by honesty and transparency which has created a culture of trust with one another. The organizational allows its members to make decisions involving how their tasks. I believe this is a key characteristic of a people-oriented culture. As informed by the article by Schumpeter (2014), Koch Industries permits its employees to make decisions without referring to their bosses. This is one of the aspects that my organization shares with Koch. As noted by Organizational Behavior (2017), in people-oriented cultures, organizations create a culture where work is fun and employees are treated with respect and dignity. As shown by Klein (2012), this focus on people is what characterizes the culture at Southwest Airlines.

How does your organization approach onboarding?
Recruitment and selection is part of every organization. In my organization, members are always encouraged to welcome and help new employees adjust to their new environment. They are offered first-day information, welcome messages, and all the information they may need about the organization. This is how I was integrated into the workplace and I have that I felt welcome right from the first day. Furthermore, HR meets with the new employee to provide guidance and answers to questions they may have about the company as well as benefits and compensation. According to Organizational Behavior (2017), an organization must develop a formal orientation program. In SAS Institute, new hires are treated as if they are an important part of the organization (Klein, 2012). I believe is extremely important for an employee to feel welcome when they join an organization.

Share examples of artifacts you have noticed at different organizations.
In this entry, I want to focus on the artifacts at Southwest Airlines. The company has been a key focus on most of the readings and there exist artifacts in its environment that promote the wellbeing of its employees. As explained by Organizational Behavior (2017), artifacts are tangible aspects of organizational culture. The company decorated its hallway with pictures of company events (Bird, 2011). Examples of events captured include employees getting married or riding motorcycles, POW's dog tags, and funny cheerleading uniforms. Other artifacts present in the company include sitting together for a meal once in a while, dressing up for Halloween, and talent shows. These aspects depict a culture characterized by a high level of employee engagement. It is deducible that these aspects of the company culture attract employees to the company and impact organizational performance.
