Answer 1
Mitigation refers to actions or strategies implemented to reduce the impact of a disaster. In particular, it decreases the economic aspect of a disaster. Assume a scenario of an area affected by the flood. If people residing at this place do nothing and wait for the rainy season, it means that many of them will have no place to go when a flood occurs. The continued increase in climate change and economic exposure contribute to future natural disaster losses. For instance, if the population in the area discussed above continues to rise, it means that the percentage of individuals, properties, and businesses that might be adversely affected will increase. Mitigation is the precaution taken to prevent such adverse consequences that are encountered when disaster happens. That is why it is crucial to decrease the economic impact of a disaster.
Education, awareness, prediction, and preparedness are some of the mitigation measures that reduce the effect of a disaster on a specific region (Botzen, Deschenes, & Sanders, 2019). Let’s refer to the example of an area affected by a flood and see how mitigation can be used to reduce the impact of a disaster. First, individuals, business owners, government, and private organizations can build dykes to prevent water from entering their residences. That way, flood water cannot spread in areas where people live or in cities with a high population. Second, community members can be educated about what to do during the flooding season. Third, people can be helped to prepare before floods by assisting them in moving to safer areas to avoid the consequences. Another mitigation measure that can reduce the economic impact is training individuals on what to do during disasters. For example, they can be taught how to swim or go before receiving help from emergency agencies.
Answer 2
Researchers and authors communicate through writing after observing or studying various things that have been affecting them. These individuals are concerned about human-caused and natural disasters since the failure to address these issues might lead to adverse consequences, such as death. People are more concerned to know about things that might affect their lives positively or negatively. That is why authors and researchers investigate various problems that affect individuals or properties and report on social or mainstream media to help people prepare. They write articles, journals, and stories about how specific natural disasters can influence individuals’ lives. When community members come across such articles, they understand how catastrophic events can affect their lives (FEMA, 2011). As a result, they take the right precaution to remain safe and protect their properties.
The materials published by researchers and authors are not accessible or read in specific areas where the disaster occurs. Instead, people from different parts of the world read them. As such, these journals significantly affect the economies of numerous nations around the globe. For example, when hurricanes strike a particular area, people from different parts of the world get that information through social media. Authors and researchers report the problem, how it occurred, measures are taken to mitigate it, and recommendations of how people can prepare, respond, and recover from disasters. In that light, a disaster that hit a specific area leads to the spread of crucial information that is accessible to individuals in different parts of the world. When people get such information, they prepare such that when the disaster occurs, they know how to respond by calling emergency agencies. Notably, the information spread by authors and researchers enables people to learn variou...
