SCOT Analysis of a Technology
Introduction
Nowadays, people are always on-the-go and it has somehow become a necessity to have computers, its files, and entertainment, at the tips of our fingers. Desktop computers were common in homes and workplaces, but the innovation of making these personal and portable was found appealing by the consumers. In this paper the social construction of technology, specifically the laptop will be discussed.
Relevant Social Groups
The first laptop was produced by William Moggridge in the year 1979, as a technology for a space shuttle program. This technology was used more for the memory system and its display screen. But after the desktop computers were already present used mostly by business executives, the first laptop that is considered close to the laptops we have nowadays was produced. This was the first fully functional portable computer. This became part of the social norms for businessmen and lawyers contributing to the production and innovation of this technology (“CSOC880”, 2020).
Interpretive Flexibility
The data that is stored on laptops have been an issue to the public because people were not comfortable that this information is portable and can be accessed anywhere, which poses a risk (Thoreau, 2010). But aside from this issue, this technology was also seen as a good device for working, especially for businessmen and executives. Reflexive modernization is applicable in the development of laptops (MacKenzie & Wajcman, 1999). The consumer wanted this type of input and output system similar to the desktop computer but with more convenience. It was later on that social messaging and entertainment also became other features of laptops.
