Local Community Responds to Conflict
The article in question highlights how the lives of Holocaust Jewish child survivors were after immigrating to Canada. Through various interviews of child survivors (conducted as part of a university program), the authors` highlight how the Jewish immigrants interacted with the already existing Canadian Jewish community and brings out the core aspects as to how they reestablished their lives after the massacre. The authors highlight the formal and informal mechanisms they used to carve out their own identity in the Canadian culture as well as integrating their identity with the existing society. This information was collected from 500 child survivors who were interviewed by the university team.
One of the key issues that arises was the fact that the child survivors were regarded as not to have experienced the holocaust to the same level as adult survivors did. Thus the stories they shared were more of family stories (as told by the adults rather than the real occurrences). Verification of such kind of information was difficult.
