Proposal Letter for a Change in the Community

Essay Instructions:

For this assignment you will be proposing a change in your own community. This could be a change in policy, a change in procedure, a change in attitude, etc. However, your topic MUST be local, either concerning a change at FIT or a change in one of your other communities.

Your task is to research a problem and then propose a solution. Whatever your topic, you will take a stance and provide support or evidence for your position. Proposing a solution demands that you use sound logic, good reasons, and solid research.

Process

First, determine a problem that needs research. You may decide that FIT needs to address a problem in a way it hasn't before. You may also consider researching a problem in your home community, a work community, or another community you are a part of.

Next, consider your target audience for this research report. For example, if you are looking into a problem in the dorms, you would probably target your final report to the head of Residential Life. Each problem will have a different target audience so think carefully about the best audience for your problem and situation.

Once you’re determined your problem and your audience, begin to conduct some preliminary investigation into the problem. Review the relevant databases and other online resources to obtain resources to expand your understanding of the topic.

Instead of a standard research paper, I am asking that this project be formatted as a LETTER either to an official on campus, a local official, a state representative, or another applicable authority figure. The recipient of your letter will depend in large part on your topic.

In addition to this letter and because letters typically do not contain in-text citations, you will also be creating a fairly extensive annotated bibliography documenting ALL of your sources. If you were to send your letter, this annotated bibliography would serve as an enclosure documenting your thorough research process as a means of increasing your authority. In this case it is important that your annotations connect to the content of your letter and the argument you are making.

Dear Mike,
Last month, I got a chance to visit Bakersfield, California, along with a friend. We were actually there to promote our beauty products, but I saw that most of the citizens refused to try our products because they had no money. Our target audience was young girls and housewives, who wanted to have glowing skin. However, I was shocked to get such a response. Out of every 10 females, we spoke to about our beauty products, 8 said that they would have bought if they had enough money. Eventually, I realized that the problem of unemployment has taken a very serious form in this part of the United States. Bakersfield covers nearly 150 sq mi and is situated in the southern part of the Central Valley and the San Joaquin Valley. The approximate population of this city is 390,000, and it is surprising that more than 10 percent of youngsters are jobless.
I finally decided to bring the matter to your attention as I feel sorry for those people who are not even able to feed their families. The target audience is men who were seen wandering here and there and looking for jobs. At the end of the day, most of them had to return home with nothing in their pockets. After seeing their situation, I automatically understood why their wives and daughters were not willing to buy our beauty products. The citizens of Bakersfield find it tough to buy their favorite food items and drinks. During my time there, I also saw that many of them were living a miserable life. They had developed various health problems and did not have money to buy winter clothes.
I would like to say that not all people in Bakersfield are living the same type of life; some of them do have jobs, but they are either pushed behind the competition or are not being paid well. Their lives are not as difficult as the lives of jobless people. According to my knowledge, the first reason for unemployment is a lack of qualifications. Many young people in Bakersfield are without any degrees and skills. Whenever they apply for jobs at top companies, their applications are rejected right away or they are asked to work for pennies. A report by Centre for Cities reveals that there is a correlation between poor GCSE results in English and Mathematics and youth unemployment. It won’t be...
