Several groups exist that intend to influence public policy. Such groups are known as interest groups. Interest groups have been seen in a sizeable number of societies and they influence decision making process. However, the US is the country with the largest number of interest groups. The groups are activists that are formed with specific objectives and they are registered. Therefore, the work covers the reason why the interest groups are powerful and whether they should be constrained.
Interest groups are considered powerful due to several reasons. First, interest groups build an effective coalition. The group contains people with shared interest on a given issue. Most people join the groups voluntarily while others join the groups because they have no alternative. All the same, a person who has joined the group will work to meet its goals. Similarly, the other members will also target meeting the same objectives. Therefore, the members will collectively work together and oppose anything that they do not want as a group which makes them very powerful and influential.
Secondly, the groups understand their political alignment and they make convincing arguments regarding their positions and problems. Some of the interest groups conduct research and write policy proposals intended to support their objectives (Matter & Stutzer, 2016). For instance, some interest groups in the US work with ‘’Think Tanks’’ which is an organization of policy experts and scholars that provide findings which can be used to influence government officials.
