Cultural factors that influence the development of ethical relationships in or between cultures
The world is a global village due to ever-advancing technology, and intercultural relationships are inevitable. It is essential to develop ethical relationships with the different cultures for a peaceful course where the cultures can relate well without conflict (Dai & Chen, 2017). The spirit of ethical relationships, however, should start within a culture and spread to other cultures. To achieve ethical relationships, several cultural factors, including religion, language, non-verbal communication, education, gender roles, customs, influence the development of the relationship.
Different cultures have different gender roles. Dai and Chen (2017) argue that it is important to understand gender roles among different cultures before settling down to judgment. In most African cultures, men cannot do house chores, while others do not discriminate. Intermarriage between such cultures proves to be challenging because of cultural differences. However, learning gender roles from the two cultures will result in the appreciation of cultural beliefs hence ethical relationships. Bonvillain (2020) says that members of the same culture should also learn the gender roles within their culture for a peaceful co-existence.
Religion is an integral part of the culture, and it plays a significant role in developing an ethical relationship. Since time immemorial, religion is trusted to develop ethics in society, and the function has succeeded within cultures. Different cultures have different religious believes, which might clash depending on cultures. Nonetheless, all religions advocate for a peaceful co-existence with neighbors (Dai & Chen, 2017). It is, therefore, a factor that develops an intercultural ethical relationship.
Customs defines culture and their beliefs. Dai and Chen (2017) note that cultural norms can be shared between cultures and help build relationships. For example, marriage is a common cultural practice across several cultures and contributes to developing ethical relationships. Other cultural customs include death, whose rituals vary from culture to culture, just like marriage. However, it helps develop ethics within cultures because it brings people together.
Perspective on the ethics of developing, maintaining, or ending relationships in members of different cultural groups
There are ways are perspectives that lead to developing, maintain, or ending intercultural groups depending on the interaction (Neuliep, 2020). The interaction determines the experience, which subsequently determines the durability of the relationship.
It is essential to seek to understand different cultural customs. This is an essential perspective of developing an ethical relationship. Once you understand another culture's customs and beliefs, you can choose to maintain or end the relationship. For instance, when two people from different cultures want to get married, it is essential to learn the partner's culture and determine whether to pursue marriage or abort it. Dai and Chen (2017) say that it is not good to make assumptions because it might lead to future regrets.
Values can vary for different cultures, and unless members of a different culture get involved in the other culture, they would not learn how the values. Getting involved ensures that you experience the values firsthand and give a rational judgment on maintaining the relationship or dropping it.
In developing, maintaining, or ending an intercultural relationship, it is vital to have a positive mindset and assume positive intent. Bonvillain (2020) believes that being optimistic helps one adapt to a foreign culture without many problems because the person will accept the cultural differences instead of criticizing it. Optimism is, therefore, a factor that helps develop, maintain, and play a vital role in case one decides to end the relationship.
