Future of the Family
There is a gradual paradigm shift in the structure and formation of a family. The social institution of a family has not been static. Instead, it has undergone significant changes arising from socio-economic and political changes that have occurred. Families will continue to transform in many factors due to changing conditions.
The contemporary and future families appear to have shifting trends. There is increased formation of new families from diverse backgrounds, same-sex parents, immigrant families, and new reproductive approaches. Parke (2013) predicts that children and parents will likely thrive in a range of unconventional family forms. The author argues that there shall be increased interrelatedness of new trends in a family organization via the shared themes embedded in families and caregiving in community and cultural contexts.
The size and composition of a family have undergone tremendous transformation. According to Pew Research Center’s Social & Demographic Trends Project (2020), data shows that the size of the millennial generation families currently surpasses that of baby boomers —they have high rates of education levels, are the largest, and are more diverse in terms of race and ethnic diversity.
