Sakurajima is an active composite volcano that is located in the southern part of Aira Caldera near Kagoshima City which is densely populated. The mountain is composed of two volcanoes; Minamidake and Kitadake as well as other parasitic volcanoes such as Nabeyama, and Gngenyama. Sakurajima was a volcanic island but the eruptions joined it to the mainland. It is an oval-shaped peninsula that measures 12.5km east-west and 9.5km north-south (Nishi, Ono, & Mori, 1999). The mountain is active since 2008 and is believed to be erupting more than a thousand times in a year. Some of the infrastructures that are likely to be affected include the Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s Sendai nuclear plant which is about 50km from Sakurajima. The magma and lahars from the eruptions is likely to flow to the nuclear power station and cover it altering its operations. Also, the mountain is near Kagoshima City thus the eruptions are likely to destroy the buildings, roads, and cars in that city or near the mountain.
