Although painful and heartbreaking experiences like the one narrated by Harriet Jacobs helped antislavery movements at the time, no reparations are sufficient to make up for the suffering. In 2023, facing the stories of Harriet and other enslaved people would only aid in ensuring that such oppressive events do not recur. In the example by Harriet, enslaved people faced the crossroad of escaping the misery at the hands of their masters and the regret of abandoning their families to escape suffering (Zinn & Arnove, 2011). The ‘masters’ had excessive power in that selling their enslaved, descendants of the enslaved, and any person of color was acceptable within society.
