Grief and Mourning in Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia causes the breakdown of the relationship that exists between the mind, behavior and emotions. It then results in mental disorders. This makes a person to withdraw from the reality and begin thinking about themselves in a negative perspective.
It is very true that the diagnosis of schizophrenia has many implications on the person's life. It may take a significant meaning in the life of an individual depending on how a person may take it. One can lose themselves, and may not be able to identify themselves. Some may forget their responsibilities in the family and lose their jobs. As all these happen new feelings of depression set in and the individual will lead a different life that is very distinct from the one they were living previously (Laursen & Vestergaard 2012). Grief and fear set in and individuals begin looking at their lives from a different perspective. Due to the life changes brought about by schizophrenia, persons who have been diagnosed recently with the condition develop depression and suicidal behavior. Therefore, it is advisable to develop safety plans when you are dealing with such individuals (Wittman & Keshavan 2007). Symptoms have their basis on medical or organic factors. They can be cases of cancer, infections, and anemia conditions. Use of drug substances also can cause depression among individuals with schizophrenia condition. Caffeine and nicotine contain substances that may trigger depression (Laursen 2012). Other drugs can cause an imbalance in the physical and the usual state of mind thus contributing towards depression.
Most of the times, grief is closely associated with feelings of sadness. An individual may be feeling regretful and develop anger. Some develop a sense of meaningless while the others feel the sense of relief. Emotions are always surprising depending on the situation of the individual. Many thoughts can come into the life of an individual and one may blame themselves for something that happened (Vestergaard & Laursen 2012). The most important thing to do is to ensure that you address cases of grief and mourning as early as possible. Grief is regarded to be a personal and individual life experience. The way that a person grieves depends on the personality of a person, life experience, nature of the loss and the faith of a person. However, there are many ways used in the treatment of this condition. The first method is by the use of individual therapy. Some people recover from grief and resume their normal activities after a given period. Use of physical exercise is one of the ways that can be employed by an individual to recover from the condition (Owen & Mortensen 2016). You can also get a lot of social support from your friends or relatives. Joyful experiences and humor can trigger the mind and help an individual to forget the difficulties that they were going through and lead a normal life. Grief and loss of a loved one can be dealt with if the individual changes their mind and begins to live in the absence of the loved one. It needs an individual to develop a new routine of life and even adopt a new sense of identity.
The other method of the treatment process of grief and loss begins with carrying out a diagnosis of the causes. There should be a qualified mental health professional who should help in the discharge of the diagnosis of the causes (Hunter & Gaughan 2012; Dzieglewski 2015). It is because each experience of grief is unique in its ways depending on the causes. It is good also to know that there are no established biological or psychological tests that can be carried out to diagnose the condition. As a result, most of the psychologists depend on clinical forms to diagnose the condition.
Religion and faith of a person is one of the ways that an individual may use in dealing with grief and depression. There are many forms of religion. Everyone has their set of beliefs that guide their daily lives. You can decide to sit in your house and pray; others can choose to gather at the grave of the deceased once in a year to recall the good moments with the lost one (Belinda & Lennox 2013). You can be visited by friends whom you share the same religious beliefs and share a meal with them. It will help in the ...
