Foucault The History Of Sexuality: We Other Victorians

You'll have the option of responding to either the Krafft-Ebing, Freud, or Foucault readings. Make sure you choose one author and read through before you write.



Questions:

1) What is/are the key idea(s) presented in the reading? Explain the underlying social assumptions at the heart of each of these.

2) Explain, in your own words, how the above ideas seem different and/or similar now. You may draw on personal observations about popular culture or your own life. Please note that because the readings are situated in western traditions of sexual knowledge, it is assumed you will be applying the contrast/compare method to contemporary western culture. However, if you would like to compare these ideas cross-culturally, please be explicit about this and include any explanatory details that may be needed.



PLEASE NOTE: You are not required to discuss anything personal that you want to keep private. If you include personal observations, you are free to alter your life story if you want to protect your privacy (e.g. Substitute yourself with ‘a friend' if you prefer). Your essay will be read by the professor and/or the TA only and will not be shared with anybody else.



Grading

1. Comprehension question: ability to explain, synthesize, and discuss ideas in the reading in your own words: 0-7.5 points

2. Application question: ability to apply the concepts and insights from the readings to other contexts: 0-7.5 points



Your assignment should be typed double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12 point font, one-inch margins all around. The assignment should be between 3-4 pages.
