Do you think that there is a role for psychology in the legal system? Psychology involves the “scientific study of mental processes and behaviours.” In other words, psychology aims to study the motive and influences behind why people behave the way that they do. Psychology delves into the social, emotional, cognitive and cultural aspects of an individual to help better understand them. Personally, it’s extremely difficult for me to grasp the idea of a world without psychology. Through the field of psychology, we have learned various things such as but not limited to: that the environment of an individual is severely impactful, humans are social creatures that mimic peers and authoritative figures, self-actualization is not possible until basic physiological needs are met, emotions are very complex and that feelings and thoughts stored in our unconscious minds unknowingly influence our behaviour every single day.

Psychology plays a significant role in the legal system. Although legal evidence is based on hard facts, the application of psychology is not to provide a guilty or not guilty verdict in a case. Rather, a psychologist merely assesses and analyzes information and shares a professional opinion based on the data gathered. This in turn helps juries, courts and institutions in making better and more educated decisions. Examples of tasks attributed to a psychologist in the legal system are: conducting psychological evaluations, expert testimony, pre-employment assessments in law enforcement and etc.

Specific areas of work for a Forensic Psychologist
Law enforcement and public safety
This entails using psychological principles to enhance public safety. A forensic psychologist helps in screening and selecting suitable law enforcement officers, counseling officers involved in shooting incidents, and analyzing criminal activities (Introduction to Forensic Psychology, 2015). Also, they help address organizational concerns prevalent within a police force such as corruption, stress, gender, and race issues.
Correctional services
Forensic psychology helps in assessing and evaluating the mental health of offenders. The correctional services of forensic psychologists help in managing offenders and reducing the risks to the public (Arizona State University, 2020). By assessing the impact of prison programs and evaluating inmates' psychology, can enhance public safety.
Victim services
This involves providing psychological services to crime victims. The victims may have suffered social, financial, mental, or physical harm resulting from the crime. This includes criminal acts such as burglaries, robberies, kidnappings, shootings, and assaults (Introduction to Forensic Psychology, 2015). The services are also offered to those who are not actual victims but have witnessed the crime or are close to the victim.
Court system
Behavioral science is applied to determine civil and criminal court cases. The psychological principles help in key legal processes. This includes areas such as selecting a jury, identifying eyewitnesses, and determining child custody cases. Forensic psychology is significant in determining the mental competence levels of offenders. They conduct in-depth interviews with the defendant and their close associates to understand their behavior (Padowitz, 2020). This service helps judges establish their psychological status during the offense.
