It is indeed true that diagnosing cyclothymia is bipolar or is dysthymia is distinct from MDD is one of the many difficulties that clinicians face today in their day to day practice. This difficulty then translates to bringing more harm than good, from practices such as prescribing the incorrect drug to the patients. Following from this, I believe that conducting further research to diagnose these comorbid illnesses more effectively would be very beneficial for future use.

Based from the facts that you have presented about the correlation of those with cyclothymic disorder and problems of substance abuse (5-10%), I believe that dedicating more research into these would be very beneficial especially in the long run.
