A traumatic event entails an experience that threatens the safety of individuals and in the process places lives at a risk. When a traumatic event happens, individuals experience high levels of emotional distress. It is normal to have strong emotional reactions immediately after a distressing event. It may adversely affect the ability of some individuals to undertake day-to-day activities. In most of the cases, these reactions subside during the recovery process. This essay will analyze the effect of trauma on family members and outline ways of assisting individuals who have suddenly lost a member of the family.
Lois, Jerry and Claire are dealing with the sudden loss of their siblings. The loss of their siblings left them stressed and unable to undertake their day-to-day activities as expected. The cognitive triad model can be applied to explain why family members reach in that manner following the loss of their loved ones. The model indicates that trauma alters thoughts about self, the environment and the future (Fenn & Byrne, 2013). This causes individuals to feel incompetent and unable to perform their duties. The hopelessness created makes it challenging for individuals to deal with the grieving process.
According to Sack (2014), helping victims of trauma is critical. The author advocates for mental health resources and a commitment to assist those who have undergone through trauma. Considering the experiences of the three individuals in the clip, the inability for such individuals to receive help can worsen their situation. Individuals who have lost their loved ones need immediate attention to prevent things from getting out of control.
