Disfluency disrupts the confirmation bias
The article “Disfluency disrupts the confirmation bias,” Ivan Hernandez and Lee Preston explore the effects of disfluency on confirmation bias. Through the use of 133 undergraduates – including sixty females and seventy-three male with an average age of nineteen years, the authors established that disfluency decreases moral bias on the decree of political issues. According to Hernandez & Preston (2013), disfluency is the deficiency of producing an appealing and fluent speech due to interruptions due to pause or repetition of words. The most interesting aspect established by this research is that when a political issue is presented in a fluent manner, the liberals and traditionalists get diverged from their previous outlooks and behavior. On the flip side, when the same political issues are presented disfluently, in this case referring disfluency, the same subjects are prompted to serious critical debates.
In the second study, involving 144 women, 259 women, and five people who choose not to disclose their gender, the authors concluded that confirmation bias did not arise when the information was presented disfluently. On the contrary, when the information was presented fluently, the subjects depicted high confirmation bias levels. However, it is worth noting that confirmation bias was also observed when participants read a disfluent load of information in a limited time frame (Hernandez & Preston, 2013).
