Cyberbullying and Its Impact on Youth Suicidality
Now that you're thinking about a topic of interest and have started finding articles, I want you to spend some time more formally delving into it. You need to pick a specific, social science topic of interest. You'll be using this to generate a bibliography, identifying key variables, and constructing testable hypotheses. This topic can be pretty much anything under the sun as long as it's somehow social science in nature. To make sure you're on the correct track, you're to begin the first parts of articulating your interest and really considering the ideas and key variables that are core to a research question of your choosing.
Be sure to format per APA style. OWL@Purdue is a great resource. You can see a sample formatted paper hereLinks to an external site. and the references list formatting rules can be found hereLinks to an external site..
Important things to note: this doesn't need to be a full page of text, you're able to do this as an outline of sorts but you must hit every requirement listed on the instructions and detail is always important. The more information you give us, the more we can do to give you feedback, which will make the final project easier. Also, make sure that your sources are from peer-reviewed, academic journals (i.e. not newspapers, not magazine, not websites such as Pew Research; these are useful but don't fit this assignment). If you already have some, you can use those
You are to write a one-page description of the research project you are proposing in this class. The final project is an introductory research proposal (i.e. you are developing and articulating the initial stages of a research project). While we get into some aspects of analysis in this course, those are to give foundations.
The purpose of the project you are proposing is: An investigation of the relationship between the DV and three IVs.
Requirements
Put your name at the top of the assignment (important) and save the file as Your Name Topic.docx
Type your topic at the top. Explain what you're interested in investigating and why you're interested in it. Make sure to note what makes it social in nature and what factors or variables you think are key to it (this aspect can come from experience as well as what you've read on it).
Locate three, academic, peer reviewed articles on your topic. These are not magazines, websites, governmental websites, Pew summaries, etc.
Write a few sentences summarizing each journal article you’ve located.
Each article should relate to your topic/key DV and at least one IV. The articles themselves may reference more than one of your IVs; this is fine. but look at them and think: which one is the strongest for your interest (i.e. centers more emphatically, makes a stronger case, etc.).
Once you’ve done this, please do the following
List your variables
You need to have four variables total: one that is your key dependent variable and three that could be theoretically plausible independent variables.
For example, let's say that my topic is on income gaps and what influences them. I'd start by identifying what can give me insight into whether a wage gap exists. In this case, I could use something one's annual income. That becomes my dependent variable. I then need to think about what factors might be influential. In terms of income gaps, some of the more common items that researchers have looked at are gender, race, age, region, education, and so on. Any of these can be chosen as the three independent variables. I would then search out articles that cover them. Important note: for this example topic, any article that you find will likely make reference to other independent variables but is likely focused on a key one (or ones). That's totally okay as it gives you further depth to your knowledge on the subject.
Write out three hypotheses (one for each IV with the DV).
Make a clear claim as to how the IV influences the DV.
For example, in terms of the income gap, I would not say "gender influences incomes" as that's extremely vague and unclear what I might mean by that. Rather, I'd likely hypothesize something like, "on average, men's income is higher than women's income." In this case, the hypothesize is built around what the IV is doing. Importantly, it's not detailing why this is the case. The hypothesis is merely a statement of what you'd expect to find, the why is a separate issue.
These should follow from the articles you found.
Include an APA formatted reference list with your three articles.

Topic: Dissecting the Interplay between Cyberbullying and Suicidal Tendencies in Adolescents
In an era where the digital realm is increasingly intertwined with the fabric of daily life, it becomes imperative to consider the sociocultural implications of our evolving online interactions. Among these implications, cyberbullying is a dire challenge, casting a dark shadow on the seemingly illuminating world of internet connectivity (Bridgit, 2023). While much has been said about the immediate emotional and psychological impacts of such hostile online encounters, a compelling need exists to delve deeper, seeking to comprehend the potential ripple effects on adolescents' mental health. By focusing on this area of concern, we aim to highlight the intricate nexus between cyberbullying and suicidal tendencies among young individuals. The profound sociological underpinnings of this issue, from peer group dynamics to societal perceptions of online behaviors, further underscore its magnitude in contemporary social science discourse.
Journal Article Summaries:
Viner et al. (2019)
In a comprehensive exploration of the evolving digital milieu, Viner and his team conducted a meticulous investigation into the changing patterns of social media use, particularly among the adolescent population. Their research painted a vivid picture, one where there is an unmistakable surge in the frequency of social media engagement among today's youth. This surge, however, has its consequences. The study found a direct link between this amplified online activity and increased psychological distress, with a particular emphasis on the heightened susceptibility of girls. The factors that mediated this distress were multifaceted. Cyberbullying emerged as a dominant cause, painting a grim picture of online interactions. Other indirect factors like sleep disruption — likely a consequence of late-night screen time — and a marked reduction in physical activity cont...
