Essay Instructions:

Exploring Cultural Self-Awareness & Intersectionality

The knowledge of cultural self-awareness is, at the minimum, understanding your own culturally determined identity, rules, and biases. As you develop cultural self-awareness not only can you articulate your own cultural identity, rules, and biases, but you also begin to move from strongly preferring only your own cultural view to becoming more comfortable with new cultural perspectives. Cultural self-awareness leads you to progress from looking for sameness to seeking complexity based on cultural differences.

I experience all these eight factors simultaneously, and separating one from the other is often difficult.
Part 2: Identity Dialogue
Essay 1

My conception as a female affects nearly all aspects of my life: as a woman, I am expected to speak, act, dress, and conduct myself in a manner consistent with social conceptions about my assigned sex. Race is another essential construction of my identity. My racial identity influences how I think about myself and my social status and privileges. I am a member of a minority group, which affects my social status in invisible and indirect ways. Similarly, my age affects how I dress and think, especially regarding career decisions.
Essay 2
The identity intersection shaped by the values of my ethnic/cultural membership is gender and ethnicity. My cultural identity is largely shaped by my ethnicity and gender. My Chinese ethnicity means that I prefer to avoid conflict, pay attention to social relationships, respect social hierarchy, and am not as individualistic as people from Western cultures (Jin & Wang, 2022). As a woman, I am expected to behave, speak, dress, and act in a manner that is consistent with the gender roles assigned by my culture. My Chinese ancestry and gender intersect to influence how I communicate with others, dev...
