To the immigrants, it bridges the recollection, family, and culture across the border. In Canada, foreign-born citizens constitute more than 23 percent of the population (Government of Canada, 2023). Therefore, the cultural continuity and social inclusion is dependent on the traditional foods accessibility. This is possible through the ethnic grocery stores where cultures specific foods are sold and keep the immigrants their food ways and adapt without losing identity. These retail outlets are also seen to play a vital role as reliable community centers that help to integrate and build relationships (Komakech and Jackson, 2016). Nevertheless, ethnic grocery stores have been challenged by gentrification, absence of support provided by policies or even competition with large corporations (Perry, 2021). Their strength brings out larger disparities in Canada food system. This paper analyzes how these stores sustain immigrant foodways and defy systemic obstacles using the Society and Culture and Political Economy methodologies provided by Koç et al. (2021). I argue that immigrant cultural identity and belonging is maintained through ethnic grocery stores, which conserve traditional food practices and resist structural constraints in the Canadian food system. Argument 1: I argue that ethnic grocery stores maintain the cultural identity of immigrants by maintaining traditional food practices, and offering a sense of belonging among Canadians. The ethnic grocery stores assist the immigrants in their cultural identity and keep them connected to the food which is familiar to them. In these stores, individuals can reproduce recipes by themselves and keep the heritage and family ties by simple food traditions. Komakech and Jackson (2016) discovered that small ethnic grocery shops in Toronto from Regent Park served culturally specific foods and created a relationship of trust and support between store owners and customers. These shops served as the area of pride, social belonging especially among low-income immigrants. Similarly, Lee et al. (2024) described that Chinese and South Asian immigrants in Toronto were dependent on the ethnic grocery stores to both uphold traditional diets and ethnic cultural affiliation in spite of adjusting to the Canadian foodscapes. Such studies demonstrate that the preservation of familiar foodways also enable the immigrant to assert cultural identity and avoid food erasure in the mainstream food culture. Applying Society and Culture approach, it is possible to observe how food is a cultural system in which the meanings, tradition, and belonging are continuously reproduced. According to Koç et al. (2021), food practices are a part of social values shared and they serve as a repository of cultural reproduction. These cultural reproductions can be facilitated in the ethnic grocery stores whereby the immigrants can convey themselves through cooking and eating.
