On the basis of your knowledge of group dynamics, explain why the packaging division is less productive than other Treetop divisions (10MKS).
Leadership is a key input tool towards the prosperity of any department in an organization which translates to the overall prosperity of an organization (Lee, 2013). Treetop as an organization has six departments of which five departments are excelling in their activities expect for the packaging department. The main reason as to why the packaging department is failing in its operations is poor group dynamics culture.
All other departments in Treetop have supervisors on site. However, the packaging department lacks a supervisor on site since they are led by a planer supervisor for the morning shift and sawmill super visor over the afternoon shift. These are supervisors in other departments meaning they cannot be available all the time to the packaging department since they have a responsibility in their respective departments ((Lee, 2013).The command chain is undoubtedly compromised in this department. Conflicts are bound to happen in this department since the chain of command here is not elaborate. In fact there is a great possibility that these supervisors from other departments who have the responsibility to supervise the packaging department lack the skills, experience and training required to be a supervisor in the department.
The intra-dynamic relationship in this department is poor. As a leader, a supervisor must be in apposition to influence, communicate, interrelate and guide his or her juniors. However, with seasonal supervisors these responsibilities cannot be executed as required. As a matter of fact, employees in the packing department are operating under their own rules since the supervisors appear technically to represent top management. In group dynamics, everyone is important in a department. In this department, there is no storming and norming hence poor performance. Unless Treetop management appreciates the importance of having a supervisor for the department then this department will never perform.

What norms have developed? What should Treetop do change counter-productive norms in the productive division (20MKS).
Indirect disputes are the immediate norms in Treetop. While supervisors aim to please by superiors by exercising the authority vested in them, employees in the packaging department will tend engage the supervisors in weird method of operations. In deed this department is an idling destination since employees will physically appear to earn their daily wages and abide by the contract of employment (Scott, 2011). The pilling of log outside this department is a perfect example of the laxity in this department. Carelessness is another norm which will develop in this department since no one is held responsible for the activities of the department. Direct conflicts will also materialize between the employees in this department since there is a poor command chain as well as communication barrier. Employees will tend to be extravagant and relaxed because there are no targets or goals expected by their department supervisor.
To curb the counter-productive norms in this department, Treetop top management must employ qualified and experienced supervisor to lead the department. Employing new supervisors for the packaging department creates an inclusive management opportunity of the available resources as well as bringing a sense of order in the department(Lee, 2013). The supervisor should formulate certain teams in within the department and choose a team leader who will be answerable to any activity done by the member of the team or the team collectively.
