COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PLAN Description A Community Engagement Plan (aka, Community Organizing Action Plan or Community Development Plan) is a written document that outlines what is needed to produce change through a community development project within the targeted community. A good plan acts as a blueprint for change that guides you and/or an organization’s activities. It also outlines the resources, including human, revenue, and marketing, that will be needed to successfully achieve its objectives. Finally, a good plan includes the strategies and tactics that you will use. What is the assignment? You will first select a change that you would like to see happen within your community. You will then create a plan that will help mobilize the resources needed in order to successfully make this change happen. Your plan can be created based on you as the individual leader or a leader of an organization. Your plan should make a case for why the change is relevant and necessary by citing outside sources, both scholarly and high-quality, reliable, non-academic sources. Your plan should discuss how you will evoke the change needed, including the underlying theories (at least two to three) that you will support to plan. Your plan should discuss the resources you need as well as how you will promote it through social and other media outlets. How is this assignment related to your future career? The ability to create a realistic and implementable plan that achieves your goals is a critical success factor in today’s complex environment within which we must operate. Critical thinking, planning, and self-reflection are skills required in your field. This project allows you to hone these skills. What are the requirements of this assignment? Your plan should cover all of the areas described in the assignment description as well as any other factors you believe are needed to create an effective Community Engagement Plan. Plans should be 6-10 pages in length, in addition to title and reference pages. At least one relevant theory (preferably two to three), supported by at least one peer-reviewed, scholarly article, cited in-text and included in an APA-style reference list. Plastic pollution in NYC stems from the inadequate mechanisms that have been put to manage the usage and disposal of plastics within NYC. As such, the city is faced with approximately 52 million metric tons of plastic waste annually (Plastic Pollution Coalition, 2024). The bigger problem is that not much effort has been put into addressing the challenges. As such, the residents of NYC are poised to face more spiraling challenges stemming from plastic pollution. Prospects such as overreliance on single-use plastics are souring the challenge (Sierra Club, 2023). To respond to this environmental concern, the stakeholders of NYC implemented various strategies including a ban on plastic bags. However, the impacts are not yet mitigated according to the prevalent data (Sierra Club, 2023). This plan tends to address this issue using a different approach, which involves implementing a community-driven initiative aimed at reducing plastic wastage in NYC. New York can implement sustainable alternatives to plastics by fostering behavioral changes in the community while also engaging in specific prospects like using strategic communication, leveraging existing resources, and mobilizing local stakeholders. Community Analysis and Problem Identification Community Overview New York City is a renowned address globally due to its vibrant business environment and enthusiastic population. Presently, New York boasts a population of over 8 million individuals. With such a large population in a small area, challenges must arise of policies and the available resources are not deployed effectively. Currently, the burden of plastic pollution is among the biggest challenges facing New York City. With an annual production of 52 million metric tons of plastic waste, NYC is a leading contributor to pollution globally through plastic waste (Plastic Pollution Coalition, 2024). Notably, efforts have been put to address the challenge. Notable among such efforts was the introduction of a ban on plastics. On 1st March 2020, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) enforced laws that would effectively ban plastics (Sierra Club, 2023). While the initiative was impactful, its impacts have not reached the helpful levels as the city still struggles with the problem of plastic bags. The fact that policies are not changing fast enough, the population is increasing, and enforcement of laws has proven inadequate means that newer strategies should be considered to address the plastic bags problem in NYC. Problem Statement New York City is faced with the problem of plastic waste that seems not to end despite the efforts that have been implemented. Single-use plastics like packaging materials, bottles, or straws lead to fueling the challenge. New Yorkers use 23 billion plastic bags annually (Pezzullo, 2023). These plastics lead to environmental impacts in areas like litter pollution, ocean pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Bearing the fact that the implemented strategies have failed to address the problem fully, new approaches like community-based initiatives should be considered to help address the issue of plastic waste in NYC. Theoretical Framework This plan intends to draw on two theoretical frameworks to mobilize the New York community and instigate a lasting change when it comes to plastic waste management. First among the theories is the social change theory. The social change theory outlines the mechanisms of change in social settings (Olatunji, 2022). The proponents of this theory indicate that effective social changes occur when collective attitudes, behaviors, and practices are allowed to evolve. In the context of waste management, stakeholders can be involved in understanding the challenge that they are facing if people keep disposing of plastic waste poorly. Upon gaining knowledge, efforts can be steered toward behavioral changes among the stakeholders. Simple strategies like encouraging the members to shift norms toward reusable plastics can offset the plan. The second theory in this plan is the resource mobilization theory. The theory fosters the strategies that social movements employ to utilize resources like the media, money, and people to achieve their agenda (Newman, 2023). The theory will be vital in guiding the engagement plan to utilize its limited resources toward the achievement of the set outcomes.
