As a part of a larger project, senior management has come to you to develop an ethics training program for all staff in the disability management department. The union is in total agreement with this direction.

There are 12 individuals who work as disability management professionals. Most of them are not certified and have not signed any code of ethics (you hold a CDMP).

Senior management wants you to do two things:

Develop a code of ethics for your department and

Develop an ethics training program

As a disability management professional with a CDMP certification and working in a large, multinational unionized organization, it will be essential to help the organization develop an ethics training program for the staff. In most cases, disability management professionals will be working in a diverse environment, and as such, it will be critical to know how to deal with different people. It is critical to provide services to people of different races, gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. In doing one's work, there is a high chance that a disability management profession will be required to work with people from a different ethnic background than theirs. It is also likely for a person to meet someone with a different sexual orientation and needs disability services. This program will aim to train professionals to avoid a situation where there is a cultural vision tunnel.
Development of a Code of Ethics for the Department
The Process Use to Develop a Departmental Code of Ethics
  It can be challenging for a person that holds one set of values to make an ethical decision about a specific issue. However, it will be easy for employees working in the disability department to make decisions (Pawlukewicz & Ondrus, 2013). Several steps will be taken in the development of a code of ethics. The first step will be to gather as much information as possible. It can be hard to have an effective code of ethics if one does not have all the required information related to the topic. As a person working with people with disabilities, it will be critical to understand the challenges that affect the industry. It is essential to get information from the employees and understand the kind of dilemmas as they do their jobs. One of the ways that one will achieve this is by having the workers fill in anonymous questionnaires where they will list the challenges they have faced and the things they would like to see being addressed in the workforce. The next step will be to analyze the type of laws that are in existence that the organization has to comply with. It is also essential to understand the future challenges and what can be done to deal with the issue (Pawlukewicz & Ondrus, 2013). The clients should also be consulted to understand the discrimination they have faced before.
Ethical and Legal Documents that will be Considered in Developing the Code of Ethics
  There are several ethical and legal documents that will be considered in developing the Code of Ethics for the organization. By consulting different documents, it will be possible to have a code of ethics that does not contradict any laws that have been passed. As a company dealing with people with disabilities, it is essential to understand the various laws that the government has passed. For example, the government has laws that protect the privacy of people with disability. Some laws ensure that people give their consent before an action is taken (Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences, 2021). By understanding such laws, one will be able to understand the best way to formulate a code of ethics. The government documents that deal with people with disabilities will thus be critical in helping us develop the code of ethics. Court documents will also play a role in helping us develop a code of ethics that is progressive. By looking at the cases that have taken place in the country, it will be possible to understand what to do and what not to do. Additionally, international documents from bodies such as the World Health Organization will play a key role in guiding how the code of ethics should be formulated. The World Health Organization has stipulated specific ways that people should be treated, and this will act as good material when formulating our code of ethics.
Main Areas that the Code of Ethics would Cover
  The Code of Ethics would cover several main areas to ensure all the employees provide the best service to the disabled community. People in the 21st century are most likely to work with people from different backgrounds and diversity (Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences, 2020). One of the areas that will be covered is how to address people that are disabled. A person that is disabled may not be in a position to do certain things, but that does not mean they should be looked down upon. The employees should be trained on how to talk to people with disability when they come to the office. When making decisions, it is essential to consult clients and make sure that they agree with the decisions that have been made (Carroll, 2004). The next area that will thus be addressed is how to consider the opinions of others. As a person brought up in a certain way, it is possible to have a narrow view of the world and impose one's values without intending to hurt others. One must set their emotions and opinion aside and have an open mind when dealing with people. The last area that will be taken into consideration is how one should treat people from different races, gender, or sexual orientation. Some questions are appropriate, and others should not be asked in the workplace.
People who will be Consulted in Developing the Code of Ethics
There are several people who will be consulted as I am developing the code of ethics to make sure that I have all the information that I need. The first person who will be consulted is the organization's top leadership. The top leadership is essential because they will be able to inform me about the vision of the organization and the culture they would like to foster. By having such a piece of information, I will be able to draft a code of ethics that best reflects the organization's objectives and mission. The other person that I will consult is the organization's lawyer. It will be essential to get input from a legal mind about the progress made in the past decade. By having a legal expert pitch in on how I am formulating the code of ethics, I will be able to have a document that does not violate the set outlaws in the country. Additionally, it will be essential to consult the leadership of the people with disability to get their input about the challenges they have been going through. The code of ethics should be a document that quickly improves the employees' and the clients' lives. By having a first-hand experience of the challenges that people with disabilities face, the document will be in a position to reflect the needs of such people. Finally, the employees will be consulted to determine whether there is anything that can be done to make it easy to serve people with disabilities.
